On Saturday, seven of Waveney Valley AC’s junior athletes took part in the final Quadkids event of the season at the Sportspark, UEA, Norwich. Undeterred by light rain and cooler conditions, with a break from the recent heatwave, Waveney Valley’s athletes competed against around 100 other athletes across four events, with the winner the highest overall points scorer across four events.
Fresh from her 2nd place finish in Waveney Valley’s closed Quadkids event, Hannah Mayne won the girls event for school years 6 to 8. This was a great success for Hannah as a year 6 athlete competing against athletes up to 2 years her senior. On the way to first place, Hannah recorded a PB in the vortex throw with a distance of 15.57m, a PB in the long jump of 3.91m and running her first ever 800m in a time of 3.07. She also ran the 100m in a time of 14.7. Also competing in that age category was Harriet Gooch, another year 6, who recorded PB’s in the vortex throw with a distance of 15.61m finishing 3rd in that event and also the 100m. Charlotte Gooch who competed despite carrying a niggling injury, finished 2nd in both the vortex throw and 100m.
Competing in the event for school years 4 and 5 for the girls were Abeni Beckham and Grace Forster, and for the boys Joel Burgess and Daniel Allen, in the smaller distances of 75m, 600m, the standing long jump and vortex throw. Abeni, competing in these events for the first time recorded times of 13.0 in the 75m and 2.16 in the 600m, a standing long jump of 1.79m (to finish 3rd in a large field) and a throw of 16.73m. Grace recorded times of 12.5 in the 75m and 2.09 in the 600m (knocking 6 seconds off her PB) and a jump of 1.71m and throw of 13.33m – the first time she had competed in this event. Both boys performed well, especially taking into account they are year 3 boys, and competing against boys up to 2 years older, with Joel recording times of 12.0 in the 75m and 2.11 in the 600m, a throw of 20.5m and jump of 1.67m (a PB from 1.53m). Daniel recorded times of 14.3 in the 75m and 2.43 in the 600m with a throw of 9.32m and jump of 1.27m.
