Yarmouth 10K, Sax 5 and various Full and Half Marathons

Waveney Valley Athletic Club member Sam Lines put in a first-class performance at the East Coast 10k by finishing first lady, completing the race more than two minutes faster than last year. Sam has made considerable progress since rejoining Waveney Valley two years ago and continues to build a reputation as one of the region’s top female athletes.
The race, staged at Gt Yarmouth, had over 700 runners, with Sam finishing 10th overall, and first Waveney, in a time of 37:59. There were 37 members of the club in the race with Mark Thompson next in 14th in a time of 38:16 followed by Lloyd Scriven in 57th in 42:27 and Andy Ayers in 81st in a personal best 43:11, more than seven minutes faster than last years race, when, as a new member, he ran his first 10k.
There were PB’s also for Sarah Norman (50:17), Stephanie Pimlott (50:54), Jon Andrews (53:00), Lee Roth (55:20), John Skelly (55:21), Dave Catchpole (57:18), Gavin Hamilton (59:15), Caroline Clamp (59:19) and Emma Hollidge (1.00:57). There were debut 10k’s by Darrel Roberts, Grainne Purvis, Mark Spackman and Amy Liddell-Andrews.
Tim Earl competed in the Melbourne Marathon and finished in 426th place in 3.09:45 and also running marathons were Alan Richardson in the Leicester Marathon in 4.51:02, Mark Smith, Budapest Marathon in 4.11:09 and Jason Browne, Palma de Mallorca Marathon in 3.48.
Jayne Richardson achieved a personal best at the Leicester Half Marathon, recording a new best time of 2.17:41 and Daren Coulter took part in the Saxmundham 5 mile event and finished 51st out of 166 in 39:52.
On Sunday, Six members competed in the Trowse 10k. Colin Galer was 50th in a personal best 42:56, Louise Adamson 380th in 58:36, Alan Varle 385th in 58:49, Emma Hollidge 400th in 59:46, Sarah Etherton-Nicoll 436th in a personal best 1.02:10 and Beth Bell 520th in 1.11:11. At the Great South Run (10 miles) in Portsmouth, also on Sunday, David Joyce recorded a time of 1.28:02 and Louise Harrod 1.29:57, both in their 10-mile debut races for Waveney Valley and Claire Evans ran the Venice Marathon in 4.45.06

Marathon’s, Half’s and Parkruns

Lisa Wilson, who joined Waveney Valley Athletic Club as a beginner two years ago, has taken part in her second marathon and produced a stunning performance by knocking more than half an hour from the time she recorded at her debut at the distance in May. At the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday, she ran a personal best time of 4.49:36. Having progressed from the beginners’ sessions, Lisa has been an inspiration to those taking up running for the first time.

Two club members were part of a 4,000 strong field in the Perkins Great East Run (Peterborough Half Marathon), also last Sunday. Lee Cook finished in an excellent 36th in a time of 1.15:49 and new member Patrick McCabe was placed 1,182nd in 1.49:33.

Grainne Purvis, Lisa Joyce and Chris Hulme took part in the Royal Parks Half Marathon. The event is one of Central London’s most popular races as the route takes in many of the capital’s world famous landmarks, including four of the Royal Parks. Over 16,000 runners completed the race with Grainne finishing in 2.00:46 Lisa in 2.38:23. Chris who started running last winter as part of a beginners group finished in 2.49:12, this was Chris’ 3rd half marathon in 2 weeks knocking over 15 minutes off his time over the 3 races.

At the Martlesham 5k last weekend, Demelza Hammond finished 84th from a field of 148 in 29:30. On Monday six members, Patricia Tuttle, Alan Richardson, David Mower, Stuart Smith, Phil Hazell and Bill Kingaby were presented with the trophy for the Ekiden Relay over 60’s team. Following a review of the results from the event in July, the Waveney Valley team have been awarded first place.

September races

Last weekend’s busy road race programme produced some quality performances by members of Waveney Valley Athletic Club, with several personal best times recorded. At the Berlin Marathon, Matt Jeffries took almost four and a half minutes off his previous best marathon time, which he achieved at last years Bungay Marathon. In Berlin, running in aid of the Get Kids Going charity, he finished in a time of 2.35:04. Competing in the same event as part of his 2017 10- race marathon challenge for Prostate Cancer UK was Mark Smith who ran a time of 4.04.

At the Jolly Jaguars 10k held at Coltishall, Samantha Lines ran an astonishing race to finish third from more than 300 athletes. She was first female to finish by several minutes and took more than two minutes off her previous best time, finishing in 37:50. Leon Neeve was 30th in a PB 42:54, Antony Croucher 36th in 43:29 and Camilla Darling 176th in 55:40.

Six members took part in the Simply Health Ipswich Half Marathon. Liam Nudd finished 73rd in 1.29:14, Alan Richardson 793rd in 1.53:25 and another first for him in the M70 age category, Patricia Tuttle 1,403rd in 2.07:14, Lisa Wilson 1,404th in 2.07:14, Michaela Gooch 1,583rd in a big PB time of 2.12:05 and Chris Hulme 2,382nd in his first half marathon, in 3.05:22.

At the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon, three club members competed. Lisa Knights finished 689th in 3.54:52, David Mower 726th in 3.56:03 and Paul Harrod 1,232rd in 4.21.35. Angela Mower opted for the 10k event and recorded a time of 1.06:55 in 1,534th place. Despite both Loch Ness events having large fields of more then 2,000 runners, there were no reported sightings of the Loch Ness monster.

Mike Quantrill took part in the West Pinchbeck 10k in Lincolnshire and finished 27th out of 151 in a time of 44:37. Earlier in September, four members travelled to Newcastle for the Great North Run. Billy Underdown, in his first half marathon, ran a time of 1.37:58. Becky Langford recorded a personal best 1.45:09. A debut also for Amanda Scarff who finished in 2.31:23 and Rob Knights completed the race in 3.12:44.

At the Wissey Half Marathon near Downham Market on September 3, Demelza Hammond ran a time of 2.36:53 and on the same day at the Bedford Half Marathon, Liam Nudd was 72nd in a personal best 1.28:57 and Tim Moore 180th in 1.34:54.

Lowestoft Scores Race

A record entry of runners took part in the 22nd staging of the Lowestoft Scores Race on Sunday, a challenging annual hilly event which also attracts a large number of spectators, particularly along the High Street.
The race, organised by Waveney Valley Athletic Club, started in the High Street and followed a route along the sea wall, Gunton Cliff and all of the town’s historic Scores before finishing at the Triangle Market, covering a distance of approximately 4.75 miles.
255 competitors completed the tough course, beating last years previous highest total of 233. The race winner, for the second year in a row, was Michael Eccles of Norfolk Gazelles AC, in a time of 26:23, just two seconds slower than his winning time last year. Second was Robert Chenery of Ipswich Jaffa RC in 27:01 and third Lee Cook of Rock Estate in 27:18. There was a new winner for the ladies with Great Yarmouth & District AC’s Colleen Mukuya crossing the finish line in 29:50, the second fastest ever female time. Second was last years female winner Jo Andrews of Bungay Black Dog RC, in 30:32 and third Louise White of Thetford AC in 32:58.
Winners of the team prizes were Mens Affiliated – Lowestoft Road Runners, Ladies Affiliated – Bungay Black Dog RC, Mens Unaffiliated – Rock Estate, Ladies Unaffiliated – Ormiston Denes Academy, Mixed Affiliated – Waveney Valley AC, Mixed Unaffiliated – Ormiston Denes Academy.
In the Junior race, which also had a record number of finishers (68), over a distance of 1.4 miles, the boys’ winner of the 9-12 age group was Joel Burgess of Waveney Valley AC in 8:30, with Finn Howes second in 8:49 and Jack Gooch third in 9:02, making it a clean sweep of the prizes for Waveney Valley. The girls winner was Tess Andrews in 9:27, with Alice Craddock second in 9:43 and Agatha Gouldby third in 10:28.
In the 13-15 age category, first boy was Samuel Stevens (GYDAC) in 7:55. Second was Billy Heseltine (GYDAC) in 8:02 and third George Browne (WVAC) in 8:21. Girls winner was Holly Bunn (CONAC) in 9:06, second was Brooke Oram (GYDAC) in 9:32 and third Ellen Lockhart (BBDRC) in 10:38.
With commitments to organising, marshaling and helping, host’s Waveney Valley had a reduced entry of 23 members in the senior race. Highest placings went to 26 Lloyd Scriven in 31:47, 27 Richard Aukland 31:55, 32 Karim Ouaddane in 32:25, 43 Andy Ayers in 33:06, 54 Matt Baldry in 33:49 and 55 Harriet Lyman in 33:52. There were top 30 placings, in addition to the club’s prize winners, in the Juniors by Thomas Spurgeon, Thomas Supple, William Browne, James Burgess, Benjamin Cone and Nathan Littlejohns,
At the prize presentation, race organiser Tim Earl thanked the sponsors, which included Birds Eye and Lowestoft Vision, Christchurch for facilities for registration and all of the marshals, traffic management officers and helpers who ensured the event was a success.

Great Yarmouth Half & Run Norwich

The Great Yarmouth Half Marathon took place last Sunday with eight members of Waveney Valley Athletic Club joining more than 300 runners at the race headquarters Ormiston Venture Academy in Gorleston.
Weather conditions were ideal for the participants as they headed south on a route that included the village of Lound and through the grounds of Somerleyton Hall, before returning to the Academy. Waveney’s Lee Cook was aiming to achieve a championship time for entry into the London Marathon and clubmate Matt Jeffries assisted with his pace. However, Lee fell just short of his target, finishing in a time of 1-18.53 in fourth place with Matt recording the same time for fifth. Both runners were presented with half marathon awards for top three placings in the Norfolk County Championships.
Leon Bernasconi finished 21st in 1-27.32 and also received a county top three award in his age category. Lowestoft Scores Race organiser Tim Earl finished 33rd in 1-29.31 and Steve Carruthers was 62nd in 1-36.27. Bill Kingaby was 92nd in 1-41.32 and was the trophy winner for first in the Mens 65-69 age category. Sarah Etherton-Nicoll, in her debut half marathon, finished 284th in 2-27.19 and Beth Bell 287th in 2-28.03.
The previous weekend, a near record club turnout of 40 members took to the streets of Norwich for the second staging of the Run Norwich 10k. Just under 5,000 runners completed this highly popular event. Bungay 10K Race 3, Fort William & Worstead

Sixteen Waveney Valley A.C. members took part in the third and final race in this years Bungay Summer 10k series on a very warm, breezy mid-week evening. Peter Rogers was first to finish for Waveney, in 12th place in 39:59. Lloyd Scriven finished 18th in 40:50 and Billy Underdown, who has had a busy summer of races, was 28th in 43:22.
Bob Milner finished 37th in 44:22, Bill Kingaby 49th in 46:16 and Alan Richardson 73rd in 50:03, again winning the trophy for first in his M70+ age category. On Sunday, Mark Smith competed in the Fort William Marathon, the sixth of ten marathons he is taking part in this year in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. The tough race is set in the heart of the Scottish Highlands in the shadow of Ben Nevis and just under 400 competitors completed the race. Torrential rain gave the 26.2 miles an added difficulty. Mark finished the race in 262nd place in a time of 4.56:15.

On Friday July 28, the Worstead 5-mile event took place, which is part of the Worstead weekend festival. The race was number eight (of ten) in this years Leathes Prior Norfolk Grand Prix series. There were well over 400 runners taking part with two from Waveney Valley. Mike Quantrill finished 118th in 35:19 and Stuart Smith, who rarely misses this annual event, in 312th in 44:15.

Ekiden, Wroxham 5k, Lord Mayors, South Downs Ultra & New Forest 10

Waveney Valley Athletic Club took six teams, consisting of six runners per team, to the Ekiden relay event last Sunday. Staged at Woodbridge School on a very hot day and organised very efficiently by Ipswich Jaffa R.C., the event was a sell-out with 200 teams competing.
The event has its origins in Japan and the marathon distance of 26.2 miles is covered by six runners in relay legs. It is one of the most popular on the regional fixture list with all of the competing clubs gazebo’s providing a colourful display.
Last year, Waveney’s mixed team were victors in their category, setting a record time in the process but this time they were pipped to first place by just over two minutes by Ipswich Jaffa who set a new best time of 2.37:26 to Waveney’s 2.39:34. A category victory also eluded Waveney’s over 60’s team who lost out to Woodbridge Shufflers by a even smaller margin of 33 seconds after more than three and a half hours of running. Waveney’s time was 3.36:59 compared to the winners’ 3.36:26. The six overall team placings for Waveney were 7th, 39th, 114th, 120th, 156th and 169th.

At the Wroxham 5k series race 3 on July 5, Sam Lines finished 2nd lady and 2nd in the Norfolk County 5k championships. She was placed 39th overall in a personal best 17:48. Jon Andrews finished 374th in 24:07. Three members took part in the Lord Mayors 5k in Norwich on July 8. Matt Jeffries was 11th in 15:53, Chris Pimlott 70th in 18:08 and Liam Nudd 113th in 19:10.
Lisa Knights travelled to the South Downs in Sussex to compete in ‘ The Race to the King’, an ultra distance event that covered a distance of 53.5 miles. She completed the hilly – or in Lisa’s words ‘ mountainous ‘ – race in a time of 11 hours 37 minutes 54 seconds. Also competing for Waveney in the race was David Joyce. On July 9, David and Angela Mower took part in the New Forest 10 mile event and crossed the finish line in times of 1.28:38 and 2.11:03 respectively.

Humpty Dumpty, Bungay 10K & Parkruns

Members of Waveney Valley Athletic Club were active recently in two of the regions 10k road races. On Sunday, in very warm, sunny and breezy conditions, 20 of the club’s athletes competed in the Humpty Dumpty event, one of the race sponsors being the nearby brewery of the same name.
The event took place at Freethorpe, near Acle and included a steep hill at about halfway as the runners went through Reedham to head back to the race HQ at Freethorpe. With the northerly breeze against them at this point, the second part of the race proved very tough.
First to finish for Waveney was Liam Nudd in 43rd in a personal best 41:36, then Steve Carruthers 62nd in 42:10, Billy Underdown 67th in 42:52, Wayne Freeman 93rd in 44:30 and Andy Ayers 110th in a personal best 44:56. Bill Kingaby was the club’s trophy winner of the day with 1st place in his age category. He was 131st overall in 45:49. A few evenings earlier, 15 members took part in the Bungay 10k series race 2. Lloyd Scriven finished 10th from a field of 169 runners in 39:53. Billy Underdown was 22nd with a pb 42:39 then Bill Kingaby 38th in 45:13. Bob Milner was 39th in 45:14, Steve Gibbs 67th in 49:05 and Daniel Critoph 71st in 49:51. Alan Richardson was 73rd in 50:01 and was awarded the first place trophy in the 70+ age category. Louise Harrod was 94th in 53:47 then 108th Stuart Smith 56:05 and Beth Bell 109th in 56:38, a personal best for Beth by almost four minutes.
Phil Hazell has just returned to the road race scene after around 15 years. In recent years he has been assisting his wife Paula in her role as Cross Country Co-ordinator but has also now made a welcome return to competition. He finished 117th in 57:49. Lisa Cone was 133rd in 60:03 (PB) with 135th Amy Bourton, 60:10, 140th Emma Branch 61:52 and 159th Donna Milner in 70:25 (PB).

Alex Moore, Fram 5, Mike Groves, Bungay 10K & Wroxham 5K

A magnificent mixed relay team triumph, a county age category champion, age cat. victories and personal best times were all part of a successful last couple of weeks competition for Waveney Valley A.C.’s senior athletes.
At the Alex Moore relay event, organised by Norfolk Gazelles R.C in very hot conditions, three club members formed a mixed ladies and mens team with the aim to contest that category but ended up beating all of the other 76 teams entered in the event. Samantha Lines ran the first leg of 2.2miles in 13:04 then handed over to Chris Pimlott who ran a time of 27:12 for his 4.4m leg. Matt Jeffries then pulled the team into the lead with a speedy 23:22 for his 4.4m leg. All three then ran together for the final 2.2m leg, which they completed in 13:17 for an overall victorious time of 1.16:49, more than three minutes faster than the second placed team Dereham Runners A.C.
On a humid evening last Friday, two members took part in a 400 strong field in the Framlingham 5 mile race, which incorporated the county championships. Bill Kingaby finished 149th overall in 36:11 and 2nd in the M65+ age category but first eligible Suffolk runner, so was awarded the county 5 mile road race title in his category. Alan Richardson was 220th in 39:34 just three days short of his 70th birthday. He will be a formidable competitor in the 70+ age group in forthcoming races.
At the Mike Groves Coltishall 10k on June 4, David and Angela Mower scored a notable double success by finishing first in their respective age groups. David was 58th, 1st M60 in 44:44 and Angela 282nd, 1st F60 in 1.08:20. Billy Underdown ran a personal best 42:48 in 39th place and Camilla Darling was 181st in 54:28, also a pb.
A dozen members took part in the first race of this summer’s Bungay 10k series. The two Billy’s led the team home with Billy Underdown finishing 27th in 43:49 and Bill Kingaby 39th in 45:26. Next was Becky Langford in 60th in 47:20, more than 2 minutes faster than her previous best 10k. Bob Milner was 61st in 47:29 then 68th Steve Gibbs 48:07, 110 Louise Harrod 53:45, 133 Phil Hazell 58:32, 137 Michaela Gooch 59:02, 157 Emma Branch 1.00:51 (pb), 158 Lisa Cone 1.00:53 (pb), 172 Sarah James 1.06:56 (pb) and 176 Mandy Roberts 1.08:39.
At the Wroxham 5k series (Race 2) on June 14, Sam Lines set another personal best time of 18:10, finishing 51st from more than 600 runners. Wayne Freeman was 200th in 21:01, Bill Kingaby 242nd in 21:49 and Jon Andrews 357th in 24:08.

Waveney Valley Athletic Club member Mark Smith has reached the halfway point of his challenge to complete ten marathons this year in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and recorded an excellent personal best, just one week after completing his fourth marathon this year. Number five was the Liverpool Rock ‘n’ Roll event and he crossed the finish line in a time of 3.44:47.
Also taking part in the race was Lisa Wilson, competing in her first marathon. Lisa, who joined the club around two years ago, has been an inspiration to those taking up running for the first time. She has progressed from the beginners sessions to now completing a full marathon in a time of 5.20:45.
Another club member who took up running less than two years ago and has shown great improvement is Matt Baldry. At the Vitality London 10k he recorded 42:47, a personal best by more than a minute. His time was almost 14 minutes faster than his first 10k in 2015 and was his fifth pb in a row, all at different distances.
Demelza Hammond travelled to Scotland to compete in the Edinburgh Half Marathon and finished in a time of 2.10:21 and club chairman Alan Fairs finished 67th from a field of 182 competitors at the Maverick Surrey 10m race. The event was mainly off-road and he recorded a time of 1.40:48.
At the third and final race in the Great Yarmouth 5 mile promenade series, Waveney Valley had 31 members competing, their highest for the series. Eight members recorded personal bests – Jon Comyn 32:21, Billy Underdown 33:35, Mike Quantrill 34:22, Wayne Freeman 34:30, Daniel Critoph 38:27, Emily Skelly 43:42, Grainne Purvis 45:18 and Emma Branch 46:26. Harriet Lyman again won the Junior Ladies first place trophy in a time of 33:22.

Great Yarmouth 5 mile, Wroxham 5k & Windermere Marathon

There was another bumper turn-out from Waveney Valley Athletic Club at race two of the Great Yarmouth 5-mile promenade series. Thirty members competed with several recording personal bests, despite the windy conditions. 367 runners completed the race with Dylan Neeve, in his first 5-mile race for Waveney, the first to finish for the club in 19th place in a time of 29:57. There were pb’s recorded by Daniel Harris 31:56, Billy Underdown 33:45, Matt Baldry 34:06, Daniel Critoph 39:19, Louise Harrod 42:36, Jayne Richardson 44:44, Emma Branch 47:41 and Kirsty Howe 49:20. Many otherswere competing in a 5-mile event for the first time, stepping up from 5k parkruns.
Sam Lines was a trophy winner at race one of this years Wroxham 5k series. She finished 67th overall from a field of 594 competitors, and 3rd lady, in a personal best time of 18:32.
On Sunday, Mark Smith successfully completed his 4th marathon in his ‘ challenge of 10 ‘ for this year in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. He took on one of the toughest in the UK, the Asics Brathay Windermere event and recorded a time of 4-44.25.

Great Yarmouth 5 Miles, MK Marathon, Breckland 10K & Dereham 10

The hectic spring schedule of road races has kept members of Waveney Valley Athletic Club very busy in recent weeks. At race 1 of the Great Yarmouth 5-mile prom series, 23 members were in action with at least a dozen running personal best times. For many it was also their first races beyond the 5k parkrun distance.

At the Milton Keynes Marathon on Bank Holiday May 1, Becky Langford achieved her sixth personal best time from her last seven races. She finished 335th from more than 2,000 runners, in a time of 3-34.51.On the same day, there were pb’s also for Alan and Jayne Richardson at the Breckland 10k. Alan crossed the finish line in 121st place in 49:15 and Jayne was 206th in 57:46.
On Sunday, a dozen members travelled to Dereham for a 10-mile race, which was the 4th event in this
year’s Leathes Prior Norfolk Grand Prix Series. First home for Waveney was Mike Quantrill in a new best time of 1-11.59 followed by Wayne Freeman in 1-14.20. David Mower, 142nd, was just four seconds outside his best time, finishing in 1-15.46 then Bill Kingaby was 161st in 1-17.20, winning the 3rd place trophy in his age group .Alan Richardson was 205th in a personal best 1-21.58 and Sarah Norman, 217th, took almost 10 minutes off her previous best, recording a time of 1-23.06. Camilla Darling was 307th in 1-31.44, Vicky Wood 319th in 1-33.26, Louise Adamson 322nd in 1-33.26, Alan Varle 352nd in 1-37.27, Demelza Hammond 358th in 1-38.41 (pb) and Beth Bell 388th in 1-45.20.
